Why Nigerian students choose Foča

The Faculty of Medicine Foča is a state faculty of the University of East Sarajevo and teaches its six-year medical programme fully in English. Small cohorts, clinical training at the University Clinical Centre Foča and low living costs make it a good place to study without the pressure and expense of private medical education. Many Nigerian students come to Foča to avoid the intense competition for domestic medical places and the high cost of private programmes back home.

We are the faculty’s official partner for international students and run our own office in Foča. From your first question to your graduation you have one contact person who knows the faculty and the local authorities personally.

Admission requirements

  • WAEC/WASSCE or NECO SSCE with credit passes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Language and Mathematics
  • Good command of English — the entire programme is taught in English
  • No JAMB/UTME required for admission to Foča
  • No entrance exam — admission through our agency is guaranteed

After graduation: your career options

Most Nigerian students who come to Foča are building a long-term career in Europe — and the MD from Foča is the right degree for that. Students who later decide to return to Nigeria can also pursue MDCN registration after a qualifying assessment.

Working in Europe

We do not stop at Germany. We support graduates into their first post as a doctor in Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria, France, Italy, Norway and Sweden. Germany in particular faces a structural shortage of doctors and many Nigerian doctors already work there successfully: after graduation and German at roughly B2 level you can apply for Approbation, the German medical licence. We look at your specific situation and tell you which country fits your career plan, then guide you through the recognition process and the applications.

Returning to Nigeria — MDCN

If you plan to return to Nigeria, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) assesses foreign medical qualifications. Graduates of foreign universities that appear in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) are generally eligible to apply for MDCN assessment. The Faculty of Medicine Foča, University of East Sarajevo is listed in WDOMS. After the MDCN assessment and completion of a housemanship (internship), you can register with the MDCN and practise as a doctor in Nigeria.

Transfer into a higher semester in Germany or Italy

You do not have to finish all six years in Foča. After your first semesters we can apply on your behalf for a transfer into a higher semester at universities in Germany or Italy: we handle recognition of the exams you have passed and send applications to up to five universities.

Requirement: German at B2 level for Germany, Italian at B2 level for Italy. We can connect you with a language teacher who can get you to that level while you study.

Recognition and transfer requirements may change and are decided case by case. Always verify current MDCN requirements at mdcn.gov.ng, and the requirements of the destination university, before enrolment.
